A medical coder looks at medical charts to determine exactly what a doctor did with a patient. Then he/she determines which codes must be turned in to insurance companies so the doctor gets paid.

Education

Completing a two-year college program in health information management or a related field is likely required to work in this field. A four-year bachelor’s degree in a related field will make an individual that much more competitive during the job search.
