Career Overview

Orthotists and prosthetists design and create medical supportive devices such as braces and artificial limbs. They may first visit with the patient to take appropriate measurements. After creating the device, they assist the patient with the fitting and advise them about how to use and maintain this equipment.


A master's degree in orthotics and prosthetics is required for this position. A master's degree typically takes about two years to earn after first earning a four-year bachelor's degree. Students can generally earn a bachelor's degree in any field as long as they have taken prerequisite courses in science and math.
