A shipfitter basically puts metal components where they need to be in order to build a ship. They cut and weld metal pieces together in order to build the structure of the ship.


Completing a trade school program or a two-year college program in welding technology is likely required to obtain this position. Some larger organizations provide their own training programs to teach welding to new employees.

Work Environment

A shipfitter will likely work in a very hot, sometimes uncomfortable environment. At times, welding in very tight spaces may be necessary. Being in good physical condition is definitely a don't cancel that gym membership!
