Optometrists diagnose and treat problems related to the visual system. They perform visual tests on patients and prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses as needed.

Education

A doctoral degree in optometry is required for this position. This degree typically takes four years to earn after first earning a four-year bachelor's degree. Most students earn bachelor's degrees in a pre-medical or biologically-related discipline before entering the optometry program.
