Career Overview

A person who designs and coordinates the decorative elements of the interior of a house, apartment, office, or other structural space, including color schemes, fittings, furnishings, and sometimes architectural features. They often use complex software to complete their designs.


A four-year bachelor's degree in interior design, drawing, computer-aided design, or a related field is necessary to obtain this position. A higher degree (master's) in a related field, which may take an additional two-three years to earn, would be more valuable.
